This year, we studied the lessons of the Holocaust together with Timo, a young German man who is volunteering at ADI. Timo bears witness to his family’s participation in the massive death machine that resulted from the Aryan racial doctrine, murdering millions of Jews, people with disabilities and others. Timo is part of a generation of young Germans who wish to atone for Nazi atrocities and work toward changing human nature. As part of the atonement process, they come to volunteer at ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran for several months. While volunteering, their moto is: “All people are equal in their rights, but not in their abilities. Caring for the weakest members of society is humanity’s greatest test, such that our work with them is the first step in the process of atonement that it is our duty to lead.”
