Last week we had another volunteer day. This time on a special day, because it was Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) in Israel. We started the day at ADI Gedera with two minutes of silence to remind while the siren went off at ten o’clock. Then we got a tour at ADI, saw a workshop where the residents made clay products and had fun with the residents on the playground.

ADI provided us with a nice lunch, after which we traveled to Moshav Nir Galim. This village was founded in 1949 by mainly Hungarian Holocaust survivors. They have also built Beit Ha-Edut (The Testimony House), in which particular attention is paid to the efforts of the Hungarian Jews to save as many Jews as possible in the last year of the war. We got an organized tour and saw a very impressive interactive movie. Then we had time in a restaurant in Asdod to reflect on this and hear the story of Tsipi whose parents both survived Auschwitz and then became co-founders of Nir Galim.

The day ended in a relaxed way on the beach of Asdod. All in all a moving, impressive and instructive day.
