Last Wednesday we once again had the pleasure to take our great volunteers on a fun and interesting outing in the Negev.

Our first stop took us to Shvil HaSalat – The Salad Trail – a vegetable and fruit farm close the Gaza border. We learned about the different plants, their smells and the conditions required for them to grow properly. We were also able to taste as much as we liked of all produce.

Unfortunately, we were also confronted with the day-to-day situation and experiences facing people living close to Gaza, as we saw a Kassam rocket that had landed in close proximity to the farm. A local artist collects all of the Kassam rockets and uses the pieces to create works of art.

After a nice lunch and a short game, we headed to Moshe Dekel, right next to the Salad Trail. There, we learned about Chevel Yamit, the region below Gaza on the Sinai Peninsula that was handed over to Egypt as part of the 1982 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. Moshav Dekel was established by Israeli residents evicted from the town of Yamit.

The day was very hot, but also beautiful and informative.
