❤️🗣️ VOLUNTEER VOICES: CHAYA SCHECHTER
Since October 7, ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran's physical rehab and emotional recovery specialists have been working diligently to help war-wounded civilians and IDF soldiers reclaim their lives. The village's Harvey & Gloria Kaylie Rehabilitation Medical Center, the first and only rehab hospital in Israel's south, is a godsend for the Negev's hardest hit communities, harnessing the talents and experience of its full-time staff and a pipeline of US medical volunteers to help these heroic Israelis make miraculous turnarounds. Over the last 11 months, more than 45 professional Physical and Occupational Therapists from the United States left their patients and families behind for weeks at a time to do their part during Israel's time of greatest need. Chaya Schechter, an Occupational Therapist and New York native, was overwhelmed by what she experienced during her two-week volunteering stint at the hospital.

"These last few weeks have been awe-inspiring, leaving us feeling like we gained so much more than the hand therapy services we provided. One of the most striking aspects of our time at ADI Negev was the strong camaraderie of the professional team. Composed of individuals from diverse backgrounds and specialties, the team worked together seamlessly and welcomed us warmly. We felt as though we were family. ADI Negev stands out and apart for its focus on true inclusivity, with its staff members and volunteers all striving to provide exceptional care for their equally diverse patients, creating a warm and loving environment.

The respect shown and care provided to the IDF warriors wounded while fighting on the front lines is inspiring. Not only are their combat injuries healed, but the bio-psycho-social aspects of their pain are fully addressed as well. On the whole, ADI serves the citizens of Israel's southern region with unparalleled care and compassion, changing lives and promoting resilience. We are so grateful to have contributed to such a meaningful cause as part of an incredible team."

☀️ A RAY OF SUNSHINE: When Idan was born, his parents were told that he would be a wheelchair user for life. Now a student at ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran's special education school, Idan has taken control of his own mobility thanks to the patient instruction of his teachers and a specialized walker that is formfitted to his body. Each morning, Idan - the boy who was told that he would never walk - deftly navigates from classroom to classroom wishing all of his friends a good morning. While Idan and most of his friends are nonverbal, each teacher has a button with a recording of themselves saying 'Boker Tov!' ('Good Morning!'), and Idan is encouraged to push the button to complete each classroom visit. With dogged determination and a delightful disposition, Idan is the ray of sunshine that fills everyone's day with life-giving light! 💪🏻♿

✨ HI-TECH MAGIC IN THE WATER! 💦 ADI Jerusalem's state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool is pure magic...and it's accessible for everyone! The weightlessness and relative calm that exists in the warm water helps our residents and special education students feel free and unrestricted, and leads to growth well beyond their initial prognoses. In fact, many who were told that they would never walk are able to take their first steps following extensive hydrotherapy! To ensure that every member of the ADI family can enjoy the benefits of hydrotherapy, ADI Jerusalem has outfitted its pool with extra long and buoyant tracheostomy breathing tubes and gastronomy feeding tubes. These advancements provide children who were once restricted from the water with a host of new therapeutic opportunities. Another exciting technological advancement is the use of waterproof tablets during hydrotherapy, allowing therapist to promote alternative communication, document each child's progress in the pool and even share pictures and videos with their parents in real-time. At every turn, we find new and exciting ways to empower our ADI family members, expand their worlds and enhances their lives. At ADI, everything is possible. 💪🏻💚

By coupling traditional therapies with gaming technology, therapists get inpatients and outpatients excited about their treatments and empower them to take control of their rehabilitative journeys. In this case, the addition of a special controller transforms a boring balance board into a slick snowboard, an immersive experience that has patients hooked immediately. And these engaging games are so easy to use that patients can play independently, freeing up the professional staff to work with others in need of attention. Listening to music both excites and calms them, and playing instruments themselves promotes self-fulfillment and advances motor capabilities. Often, we are able to better understand their personalities by the instruments they choose and how they use it to express themselves. And all of their physical exertion is rewarded with the music they create – a physical and emotional achievement they can immediately appreciate. 🛩️☁️ EVEN THE SKY'S NOT THE LIMIT: On Friday, September 6, more than a dozen rehabilitation patients from ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran took to the southern Israel skies with pilots from the Ananim organization for a cathartic and uplifting experience that set the tone for the new year. With residents from ADI Jerusalem looking on, Ananim founder Shay Shimon and 30 other pilots gave personal aerial tours of the Negev to exuberant war-wounded soldiers and civilians who are rehabbing at the Kaylie Rehabilitation Medical Center at ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran - the first and only rehabilitation medical center in Israel's south. In addition to providing a moment of joy during the ongoing Iron Swords War, the flights also represented a respite from each person's complex battle with disability and a metaphor for hope, progress and reaching beyond one's limitations to uncharted potential.

In attendance was Major General (Res.) Doron Almog, Founder of ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran, Israel Prize Laureate, and Chairman of the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Israel, who was deeply moved by the inspirational initiative.

"This event and partnership is perfect, because empowering those with challenges and providing them with opportunities to feel equal is exactly what we do at our ADI centers," said Almog. "Today, we did something truly special by allowing those in the middle of their rehabilitative journeys to touch the sky, giving them a glimpse of what's possible with hard work and dedication and reminding them that they aren't alone."

We are so grateful to Shay Shimon, all of the pilots from Ananim and everyone else involved in this exceptional event. Thank you for helping us lift the spirits of our ADI family members and encourage them to soar towards their greatest potentials! 🙏🏻❤️
