In a meaningful and poignant celebration of their coming of age, five residents of ADI Jerusalem marked their Bar/Bat Mitzvah with a trip to Kever Rachel (Rachel’s Tomb).
Accompanied by family members, staff and National Service volunteers, the young celebrants prayed at the tomb of “Mamma Rochel,” a site recognized as a special place for prayer for thousands of years. In an additional ceremony of significance, girls “took challah” (the halachic obligation of separating a portion of the dough as a tithe before baking), exemplifying responsibility for mitzvot.
Concluding this meaningful trip, everyone gathered for an “Amen” meal, during which each participant in turn recited the appropriate blessing over various types of food and everyone answered “Amen” to each blessing. At the end of the ceremony, a member of the notable Kever Rachel Kollel addressed the group, adding sincere words of blessing and good wishes in honor of the special occasion.
The ADI group was warmly received by worshippers and visitors present at Rachel’s Tomb. “It’s always a great privilege to pray at Kever Rachel,” said Chani, a regular visitor to the holy site, “but especially on a day like today, in the presence of these pure children.”
